Wimmers Factory Shop & Save

Located in the picturesque Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Cooroy, on the site of the historic Wimmers Soft Drink Factory, our client’s brief was to develop a supermarket for the township that paid homage to an Australian icon of the beverage industry. Dating back to the 1800s, this history was incorporated throughout the design with a number of factors including the centres name “Wimmers Factory”, use of historic imagery and the Shop n Save logo being presented in form of a bottle top.

The intent was for the township’s second supermarket to compliment the existing IGA in which the clients also owned. It was to not reproduce a standard supermarket offer rather provide a more market style feel providing the community a different line of products and shopping experience.

The combination of smart materials selections, retention of mature trees and incorporation of the building into the natural fall of the site, has resulted in a new commercial offering for the community which naturally blends into the existing landscape.

The natural topography had a fall from front to back of approximately 1 storey. We used this natural fall to provide pedestrian and vehicular access for both frontages. From the main frontage of Garnet Street the building is a single level form fitting in with the surrounding context and provides on grade vehicular and pedestrian access. From the rear service lane the building heightens to 3 levels providing access to the delivery area for service vehicles and access for pedestrians both through the site and also into the basement car park.
